How to add pages to a scrapbook album

Identify the binding and match the refill size, holes or hinges before opening it. Add only compatible pages to an expandable album; use a second volume for a fixed, damaged or overfilled binding.

Look at the spine before buying refills. The binding decides which pages fit, and refill pages have to match its hole pattern or hinge.

Take a photo of the album open at its binding and its page edge. It saves a wrong purchase when you compare refills in a shop or online.

Make a digital scrapbook

Add your photos and keepsakes in tbf scrapbook, then arrange them on the pages.

Post-bound albums

Open the back cover, find the screw caps along the spine and undo them. Lift off the back cover and lay the new page protectors over the posts in the right place.

If a screw spins or resists, support the album and check the maker's instructions. Stop before forcing a fitting or damaging a finished page.

  • Use only compatible extension posts within the album maker's capacity guidance.
  • Keep protectors and double-sided pages in their planned order.
  • Tighten until snug; overtightening crushes the protectors.

Ring and strap-hinge albums

A ring album opens like a binder. Refill pages must match the ring count and spacing; hold an old page against a new one to compare holes.

A strap-hinge album holds pages on straps or wires threaded through loops on each page. Release the straps at the cover and slide the new page's loops on in sequence.

Sewn, glued and spiral books

A fixed binding is not a refill system. Start a matching second volume rather than cutting stitching, unwinding wire or gluing extra leaves into a finished album.

For a valuable or fragile old album, keep additions in a separate companion book and ask a book conservator before altering the binding.

When the album is full

Start a second volume rather than forcing one more page. Label both spines with the dates they cover and keep them in the same size and binding.

A digital book has its own page limit to check. tbf scrapbook's free plan is one book of up to 10 pages.

Measure usable page width and height, hole centres and distance from holes to the inner edge. The cover size alone does not tell you whether a refill will fit.

Steps

  1. Identify the binding

Open the album flat and look at the spine edge. Screws, rings, loops on straps or stitching each mean a different refill.

  2. Match the refill

Measure the page and the hole or loop positions. Compare a removed page with the new one before you open the packet.

  3. Insert in order

Lay the album on a table with finished pages supported. Add the new pages where they belong in time, not at the back.

  4. Close and test

Close the album and turn every page near the new ones. Check that nothing rubs, catches on a post or sits proud of the cover.

Questions

Can I use another brand's refills?

Sometimes, for post-bound and ring albums, if size and holes match. Strap-hinge pages are usually tied to one range; test one page before buying many.

How many pages can a post-bound album take?

It depends on post length and how bulky the pages are. Extension posts add some room, but a strained spine is the sign to start another album.

Can I take pages out once they are in?

Expandable albums can allow removal if the maker's system opens. Do not cut pages from a sewn book to make room; it can weaken the binding or another leaf.
