Cheap photo book: where to cut the cost and where it shows

Page count, size and cover set most of a photo book's price, then delivery and extra copies. Cut pages first, use a softcover for a book read a few times, and keep enlarged photos sharp.

A low starting price may cover fewer pages or a smaller format than you need. Price the finished specification before deciding which part to simplify.

Compare the total for the book you actually want, delivery included, rather than a starting price.

Make your photobook

Arrange your photos on A4 pages, check the proof and order a printed copy.

What moves the price

Each choice on the order form adds to a base price. Find which ones your book needs and which are habit.

  • Pages beyond the printer's minimum, usually sold in steps.
  • Size: a larger page uses more paper and a larger cover.
  • Cover: hardcover boards and fabric usually cost more than a softcover.
  • Paper upgrades: heavier, photographic or special finishes.
  • Binding: lay-flat is usually dearer than a standard binding.
  • Delivery speed, and whether delivery is charged per order or per book.
  • Extra copies, and whether each one is ordered separately.

Savings that hardly show

Pages are the biggest lever you control. Cutting weak photos lowers the price and improves the book at the same time.

A smaller size is fine for a book read in the hand. A softcover is fine for a single event looked at a few times.

Ordering early avoids paying for faster delivery. Ordering all copies at once avoids paying delivery more than once where it is charged per order.

Write the total as base book + extra pages + upgrades + delivery + taxes shown at checkout, less discounts you qualify for. Compare that total per copy, not the headline discount.

Savings that show on the page

Squeezing more photos onto each page to save pages shrinks faces until group photos are hard to read. Drop photos instead.

Thin paper lets a dark photo show through from the other side. A softcover in children's hands soon creases at the corners.

Choosing a small size for a book of group and landscape photos leaves everyone tiny. Size down only when most photos are of one or two people.

Copies for several people

Make one master and check it before ordering copies. Mistakes multiply with every copy ordered at the same time.

Check whether switching covers preserves the same page dimensions and design. Some printers treat them as separate products, so do not assume a master transfers unchanged.

When a digital copy will do

Not everyone on the list needs paper. A PDF opened on a tablet or a television costs nothing to share, and paper can go to the people who will keep it.

tbf scrapbook's free plan makes one book of up to 10 pages and downloads it as a PDF without a watermark, with no card needed to start.

Steps

  1. Set the budget including delivery

Decide the most you will spend on the whole order, delivery and copies included. Work backwards from that figure, not from a starting price.

  2. Choose size and cover by use

Pick the smallest page that keeps group faces readable. Compare both cover options at that size using the delivered total, without assuming an occasion requires an upgrade.

  3. Cut pages to fit

Price the minimum page count, then add pages only for spreads that earn them. Remove near-duplicates before removing whole events.

  4. Order once, in time

Check one copy or a careful proof, then order every copy together at standard delivery, well before the date it is needed.

Questions

What is the cheapest way to make a photo book?

Compare the delivered total at the minimum useful page count and size. Check any offer conditions or subscription charges. A PDF avoids print and delivery costs if paper is not needed.

Are cheap photo books worth having?

Judge the exact product and files. A short, well-edited book can cost less without losing useful photos; cover, paper and care matter more than the occasion named on the order.

Is a photo album with prints cheaper than a photo book?

For a small number of photos it can be. A book carries captions and layouts, and an album lets you add prints later. Price both for your photo count.
