How many pages in a scrapbook: plan it from your photos

Count the photos you will use, divide by how many sit on a page, then add pages for the title, the end and big keepsakes. Forty photos at three a page, plus four extra, makes 18 pages.

The page count follows the material, not the album. Decide what goes in first, then choose an album with room for that count and a few spare.

Count sides, not sheets. One sheet has two sides, and albums and refill packs do not all count the same way, so check which one a packet means.

Make a digital scrapbook

Add your photos and keepsakes in tbf scrapbook, then arrange them on the pages.

Work it out from the photos

Choose the photos first and count them. Pick an average per page: one or two for portraits and detail, three or four for a sequence, six for a grid of small prints.

Divide and round up. Then add a title page, an end page, an opener for each section and a page for every large keepsake, such as a programme or letter.

Allow for bulk on paper

Pockets, tickets and raised pieces add thickness. A post-bound or ring album may take fewer finished pages than empty ones, so put three finished pages in before buying more refills.

Set a page budget before laying out

A 10 to 20-page target is one option for an event book. Set section budgets from your actual material, especially when letters or keepsakes need more room than photographs.

If the count runs high, cut near-duplicates first. Three shots of one moment become the one with the clearest faces, which can save a page every few spreads.

Digital page counts

On screen there is no binding, so bulk is not the limit; the reader's attention is. Keep sections short and start each one with a page that says what follows.

Check any page limit on the plan you use before laying out, so the last section is not the one that gets squeezed.

Check the arithmetic in sides

Forty photos at three per side need 14 photo sides after rounding up. Add four other sides to make 18. If an album holds ten two-sided sheets, it has 20 sides, leaving two spare.

Steps

  1. Choose and count

Pick the photos you will actually use and count them. Count keepsakes separately, since many need a page of their own.

  2. Set photos per page

Choose one average for the book. Go lower when faces matter and higher for sequences and small prints.

  3. Add the extras

Divide, round up, then add a title page, an end page, a page per section opener and one for each large keepsake.

  4. Test against the album

On paper, build three finished pages and check the album still closes. On screen, check the total against any page limit.

Questions

How many pages fit in a 12x12 scrapbook album?

That depends on the binding and how thick the finished pages are, not the page size. Read the stated capacity, then test a few finished pages with pockets in.

Is 20 pages enough for a scrapbook?

At three photos on each of 18 photo sides, a 20-side book leaves two sides for title and ending and holds 54 photos. Letters or larger images reduce that count.

Should a scrapbook have an even number of pages?

Count sides when planning a physical book. A blank reverse still uses a sheet, and print services may impose their own minimum and page increments.
