Two-page scrapbook layout sketches
Sketch two scrapbook pages together. Align photo edges across the spread, and leave space beside the binding so faces, handwriting and keepsakes remain visible.
Draw the two pages together before laying out either one. A repeated top edge or photo row can connect them without putting one photograph across the centre.
For two 12-inch pages, sketch a 24 by 12-inch spread. Treat each page's inner edge as a separate margin and allow more room if the binding conceals it.
Try this in your own scrapbook
Arrange your photos on the pages of a digital scrapbook in your browser.
Set the centre gap first
Leaving 0.75 inches at the inner edge of each page creates a 1.5-inch gap across the binding. Keep faces and writing out of that gap.
A photograph split across the binding can hide the subject or break its shape. Two related complete photographs usually give a clearer comparison.
Align photo rows across both pages
Use the same top edge or baseline for image groups on both pages. The left can have a large scene while the right has smaller related views.
- Align the tops of matching-height photographs across both pages.
- Put a main photograph opposite a grid of its details.
- Compare earlier and later views in equal boxes with dates underneath.
- Place a document opposite photographs of the occasion it records.
Choose the order across the spread
A process can run across the left page and then the right. A comparison can use one date on each side. Choose which relationship the spread needs.
If a keepsake opens outward, sketch its open position too. A fold-out must not cover an item that the reader needs to see at the same time.
Steps
Shared row
On each 12-inch page, place two 4 by 6-inch portraits side by side with a 0.5-inch gap. Keep the tops aligned across the two-page spread.
Large scene and grid
Put a 6 by 8-inch portrait on the left page and four 4-inch squares on the right. Centre the groups within their own pages, away from the binding.
Paired dates
Place a 6 by 4-inch landscape at the same position on each page. Put the matching date beneath each image and any shared map below one side.
Document and photos
Give a full document copy the left page, inside its margins. Use the right for related pictures, leaving the document large enough to read.
Questions
How wide is a two-page 12-inch scrapbook spread?
The sheets total 24 inches in width, but the binding and planned margins reduce usable space. Measure the actual open album before treating the centre as available area.
Should a scrapbook photograph cross the centre fold?
Only if the split will not hide an important detail and the binding permits it. Keeping complete photographs on separate pages is easier to read and adjust.
Do both pages of a spread need the same layout?
No. Share a top edge, baseline or colour while letting one side hold the main scene and the other its supporting photographs or document.
