Junk journal vs scrapbook

A scrapbook usually gathers material around a memory or subject. A junk journal often uses found papers as the book itself, with space for writing, collage and collecting as you go.

The names overlap. Use a scrapbook for a planned account of an event, or a journal if you want to keep adding papers and writing without a fixed ending.

A journal made from envelopes and old packaging has different practical limits from a book of photo-safe sleeves. Thickness and paper quality need attention.

Plan a scrapbook around an event

For a scrapbook, gather the holiday photos and tickets first. Arrange them in order so someone else can follow the trip.

A junk journal may start with the interesting papers themselves: a folded map, an envelope or a page with enough blank space to write on.

Leave room to add to a journal

Chronological pages help someone else understand an event. An open journal can keep today's drawing beside yesterday's receipt without explaining the whole sequence.

  • A scrapbook can follow one completed occasion.
  • An open journal can hold drawings, receipts and writing as you collect them.

Handle found paper as decoration

The National Archives recommends suitable materials in contact with photographs. Keep unknown found paper away from valuable originals; use copied images in craft pages.

Fold-outs and pockets need room to open. Test them in a closed book before placing another thick item opposite them.

Steps

  1. Choose a finished book or an open one

Decide whether you want to record one event or keep adding material. Plan page order for the event, or leave blank areas for later entries.

  2. Choose the page base

Use regular sheets for a planned photo story, or varied papers for an open journal. Reserve readable areas before adding collage.

  3. Trial a thick spread

Place an envelope opposite the intended photo arrangement. Close the book and check that the contents are not pressing against one another.

  4. Store originals separately

Keep unique photographs and important paper originals in suitable separate housing. Put copies into the experimental pages.

Questions

Can a junk journal also be a scrapbook?

Yes. You can build a journal from varied papers and arrange a photo story inside it. Check that the pages can hold the intended material without crowding or strain.

Is a junk journal supposed to use only rubbish?

No. Found paper is one material choice. You can combine envelopes or packaging with new paper, copied photographs and your own writing.

Which format suits a gift about one occasion?

A planned scrapbook makes the occasion easier for the recipient to follow. An open journal suits someone who wants to continue filling the book themselves.
