Scrapbook envelopes for folded and private keepsakes

Use scrapbook envelopes for loose items that need a closure. Size each envelope around its contents, leave the flap accessible and place it where it can open fully.

Use an envelope for a letter or card you want to remove and read. Choose the size around the contents, including any folds.

If the enclosed item explains the page, place a copy beside the envelope. That lets someone read it without removing the original.

Try this in your own scrapbook

Arrange your photos on the pages of a digital scrapbook in your browser.

Measure the filled envelope

Include the thickness of the contents when choosing an envelope. A tight fit can crease corners or make the item difficult to remove.

Lay the filled envelope on the page and close the book. Move it if the flap or closure presses into the facing page.

Point the flap into open space

Fix the envelope body only. The flap needs room to fold back without catching the binding, page edge or nearby photographs.

A side-opening envelope works where the page has space beside it. A top-opening one needs clear room above.

Identify what is inside

Put the occasion and date beside the envelope. Number similar envelopes if you need to distinguish them.

For a digital book, photograph the envelope front and the unfolded item separately. Place the readable image beside its wrapper.

Steps

  1. Choose the contents

Group one letter with its envelope, or tickets from one outing. Avoid mixing unrelated dates in an unlabelled bundle.

  2. Check the fit

Slide the pieces in and out several times. Choose more room if you need to bend them to clear the opening.

  3. Position the closure

Set the envelope away from the inner margin. Open the flap and remove the contents while the book lies flat.

  4. Put a copy beside the envelope

Add a photograph or copy of the enclosed document. Leave enough space to open the envelope and remove the original.

Questions

What belongs in a scrapbook envelope?

Loose letters, small cards, ticket groups and flat pieces that you want to remove. Put thick objects in separate storage instead of forcing the book shut.

Should I seal the envelope?

Leave it openable if someone needs to read the contents. A sealed envelope may have to be torn to get the item out.

How do I show an envelope digitally?

Use separate photographs of its front, back and unfolded contents. A picture of a closed envelope alone hides the material inside.
