How to choose an online scrapbook maker
Before choosing an online scrapbook maker, build your hardest page on its free tier, export it, and read what happens to your book if you stop paying. Then compare limits.
Feature lists look alike. The differences show up when you try a real page, try to get it out again, and read the small print on plans.
Give each maker you are considering the same short test: one difficult page, one export and a read of its help pages.
Make a digital scrapbook
Add your photos and keepsakes in tbf scrapbook, then arrange them on the pages.
| What to check | Why it matters | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan limits | Pages, storage and number of books decide whether your whole project fits before you pay. | Pricing page, usually in the plan comparison |
| Page editor | Free placement suits keepsakes of odd shapes; fixed slots are quicker but may crop them. | Build one test page yourself |
| Export formats | A PDF is for reading; page images and an editable file let you reuse the work elsewhere. | Help pages on exporting or downloading |
| Watermark | A mark on every page of a free export affects a book you plan to share or print. | Export a test page and look |
| Contributors | Sending in material is not the same as editing pages. Check who can do which. | Help pages on sharing or inviting |
| Audio and video | Recordings only play in a digital copy, never on a printed page. | Feature list, then test one upload |
| Printing | Some makers print, some only export. Exporting lets you choose any printer. | Pricing page or order pages |
| Stopping payment | You need to know if the book stays readable, editable or downloadable after a plan ends. | Terms of service or billing help |
| Deleting your account | Photos of other people should be removable when you are done. | Privacy policy and account settings |
Build your hardest page first
Pick the page you expect to fight with: a tall portrait, a scanned ticket with small print and a long paragraph of your own writing.
Build it in each maker you are weighing up. A tool that handles that page will handle the easy ones.
- Can you place the ticket without it being cropped to a slot?
- Is the small print still readable on the finished page?
- Does the long paragraph fit without shrinking to a tiny size?
Export before you commit
Export the test page and open the file on a different device. A flat PDF is good for reading but cannot be rearranged later.
If a maker offers an editable file or page images, try those too. They decide whether the work can ever move to another tool.
Read what happens when you stop paying
A paid plan you cancel in two years still has to leave you with a readable book. Look in the billing help or terms for the words cancel, downgrade and expire.
Whatever the answer, download a full export each time you finish a section. Then the answer matters less.
Price the whole book, not the month
Estimate pages and storage for the finished book, then find the cheapest plan that holds it. A large free page allowance can matter more than a low monthly price.
tbf scrapbook's free plan is one book, up to 20 pages and 250 MB, with a PDF export that carries no watermark. A test page there takes no card.
Steps
Shortlist two or three
Pick makers that run where you will work, in a browser or on your device. Note each one's free plan limits from its pricing page.
Make the same test page
Use one portrait, one scanned keepsake and a long paragraph in each. Time how long the page takes and note anything you could not do.
Export and inspect
Export the page, open it on another device and zoom into the small print. Check for a watermark and whether the file can be edited.
Read the exit terms
Find what happens to your book after a plan ends and how to delete your account. Choose the maker whose answers you can live with.
Questions
Do I have to pay for an online scrapbook maker?
Many have free plans with limits on pages, storage or exports. Check whether your finished book fits inside those limits before you start.
Can I move a scrapbook from one maker to another?
Only as far as the exports allow. Page images can be placed in another tool; a flat PDF is hard to rearrange. Keep your original photos outside any maker.
Is an online maker safe for family photos?
Read who can see a book by default, what a shared link reaches and how deletion works. Choose settings before inviting anyone, not after.
