Digital scrapbook ideas and formats

A digital scrapbook combines photographs, scans of keepsakes and your own writing. Arrange them on pages rather than keeping them in a photo folder.

A holiday folder holds photographs. A scrapbook can put the train ticket beside the platform photo and the map beside the walk it records.

Choose the page shape before adding decoration. On a phone, a single tall page is easier to read than a wide spread full of small images.

Make a digital scrapbook

Add your photos and keepsakes in tbf scrapbook, then arrange them on the pages.

What to include

Choose a weekend, a school year or a month in a new house. Set an end date so you know which photographs belong in the book.

  • Photographs show people, places and changes.
  • Scans add tickets, drawings, recipes and handwriting.
  • Your own text can record names and dates the images cannot show.

Keep the original files separately

Keep the complete photographs in a separate folder. A finished page may contain a cropped or reduced image, so it should not be your only copy.

Start with a photograph of the place, then show what happened there. Put a detail such as a train ticket beside the photograph it helps explain.

Choose pages that suit the screen

A dense grid can hold a day with many pictures. A page with one large image works better for a face, a drawing or a keepsake with small writing.

Try reading the smallest detail without zooming. If it fails, give the item more room or move it to its own page.

Steps

  1. Opening scene

Use a photograph of the place with a dated map or invitation beside it. Keep both large enough to see their details.

  2. People and activity

Pair a group photograph with an image of the activity, such as cooking or playing a game. Choose pictures that show different people.

  3. Small objects

Give a ticket, recipe or drawing a page beside the photograph that explains it. Preserve the whole object before making any crop.

  4. Ending

Finish with the last scene from the occasion, or a later view of what changed. Keep unused photographs in the source folder.

Questions

What is the difference between a digital scrapbook and an album?

An album mainly presents photographs. A scrapbook also arranges objects, drawings and your own writing so that the items explain one another.

Can a digital scrapbook include paper keepsakes?

Yes. Scan a flat keepsake or photograph a bulky one, then use the image on a page. Keep the physical original separately.

Do I need decorations on every digital page?

No. A clear photograph beside a relevant keepsake can make a complete page. Add a decorative element only if it helps the arrangement.
