12 yearbook themes for 2026, and how to carry one through
A yearbook theme is one idea that shapes the cover, section openers and fonts. The strongest come from the year itself: a building, an event, a phrase people used. Twelve below.

A theme has to make sense to someone opening the book in twenty years. It works best when it points at something that happened that year.
Each row says how the theme shows on the cover and inside.

| Theme | Cover | Inside |
|---|---|---|
| Then and now | A first-day photo beside a last-day one | Each section opens with an old and a new picture of the same place |
| The map | A drawn map of the school or town | Sections named after rooms or places on the map |
| By the numbers | One big figure from the year | Counts on each opener: matches played, books read, trips taken |
| Field notes | A plain notebook cover with a label | Pages styled as notes and sketches, with handwritten captions |
| Time capsule | A sealed envelope or box | What people wore, played and talked about, as a record for later |
| Seasons | Four colours, one per term or season | The book runs in date order, one colour band per season |
| Under construction | Scaffolding, if the school was being built or rebuilt | Progress photos of the building beside the year's events |
| The playlist | A track list in place of a contents page | Each section named after a song the year group chose |
| Behind the scenes | The empty hall before an event | Cooks, caretakers and office staff given the same space as the teams |
| One word | A single word the year voted for | The word in a different setting on each section opener |
| Instant photos | A grid of instant-style prints | Candid photos with written dates rather than posed portraits |
| Newspaper | A front page with the year's main story | Sections run as news, sport, arts and letters |
Pick it from the year
Ask the year group or committee what they will remember first. A theme taken from a real event dates the book better than a word chosen because it sounds good.
Carry it with three things
Hold the theme with one font pair, two colours and one element repeated on every section opener. Anything more starts to fight the photos.
Test it early
Mock up the cover and one spread before photos are due. If the theme needs a paragraph to explain it, choose a simpler one.
Pages to make
Collect ideas
Ask everyone for one word or event from the year and list them all.
Shortlist three
Keep the three that could fill a cover and a section opener.
Mock up a spread
Lay out the cover and one inside spread for each, then vote.
Write a style sheet
Note the fonts, colours and repeated element for everyone who makes a page.
Questions
What are some good themes for scrapbook yearbooks?
Then and now, the map, by the numbers, field notes, time capsule: themes taken from the year itself, a building, an event, a phrase people used. Twelve are listed above.
What are some funny themes for a yearbook?
Overheard: a phrase from each class as its opener. The weather report: every event by the day it rained. Keep the joke in the openers and captions, never in the names.
Can a group make a yearbook online?
Yes. In an online scrapbook several people can send photos to one book, and the editor places them in the agreed style.
