How to make a scrapbook from your photos and keepsakes

To make a scrapbook, choose a subject, sort photos and keepsakes into small groups, sketch the pages, then arrange each group before fixing anything in place.

Start with what you already have. Six photographs and a ticket are enough to plan a short book about one day.

Paper gives you objects to handle. Digital pages let you use photographs of those objects and rearrange the book without cutting them.

Make a digital scrapbook

Add your photos and keepsakes in tbf scrapbook, then arrange them on the pages.

Choose photos before buying materials

Lay out your chosen photos first. Decide which belong together and leave the rest in storage. The number of groups tells you roughly how many pages you need.

  • One event can run from preparation to the last photograph.
  • A year can use seasons or months as sections.
  • A person's book can group homes, hobbies and shared occasions.

Try the arrangement on spare paper

Cut blank paper rectangles to match your intended photo sizes. Move them around a spare sheet and reserve room for the keepsake before choosing decoration.

Use copies for experimental cutting. Put originals aside when a layout calls for trimming, tearing or adhesive.

Place large items first

Start with the largest keepsake. Set aside enough room for a postcard or long ticket, then arrange the smaller photographs around it.

For paper, test the closed book after adding a bulky page. For digital, preview a whole spread before adjusting individual details.

Steps

  1. Sort the material

Make separate piles for each event or part of the subject. Remove duplicates and photograph objects that will not sit flat.

  2. Sketch the sequence

Draw a box for each planned page and list its photos and keepsakes. Include the first page and a final photograph before assembling anything.

  3. Arrange before attaching

Place the largest item, then the photos, then your own text. Check that the reader can follow the page without lifting or overlapping pieces.

  4. Review the whole book

Turn through the pages in order. Fix missing dates, crowded pages and any item whose relevance is unclear before adding final decoration.

Questions

What do I need for a first scrapbook?

For paper, use an album, copies of photos, suitable mounting materials, scissors and a ruler. For digital, begin with image files and a page editor.

Should I make the cover or inside pages first?

Plan the cover early but finish it after the inside pages. Choose a cover image that represents the photos you kept in the book.

How many photos should go on each page?

Use fewer for details or important faces, more for a sequence of actions. Sketch with rectangles before committing to a photo size.
