Scrapbook supplies for beginners

Begin with an album, paper, copies of photos, a ruler, scissors and mounting materials suited to the items. Buy decoration after you have arranged the first few pages.

Choose the album before buying paper. Check which sheets fit, how thick the finished pages can be and whether you can add pages later.

Start with a ruler and scissors. Buy a punch, stamp or cutting machine only when a planned page needs the cuts or shapes it makes.

Make a digital scrapbook

Add your photos and keepsakes in tbf scrapbook, then arrange them on the pages.

Buy for the album you have

Check the usable page area, not just the cover dimensions. Rings, sleeves and binding margins can reduce the space available.

  • Album or binder with space for the intended thickness.
  • Plain backing sheets that fit the pages.
  • A ruler, pencil and scissors for planning and cutting copies.
  • Mounts or enclosures appropriate for the material.

Protect original photographs

The National Archives recommends mounting photographs without glue or adhesive. Use duplicate prints for craft experiments and suitable photo-safe enclosures for originals.

An acid-free label alone does not establish photo-safe storage. Ask whether photo-contact materials have passed the Photographic Activity Test, which the Image Permanence Institute describes.

Add tools when a page needs them

A paper trimmer is useful for repeated straight cuts. A corner punch makes matching corners. Check how often the planned pages need either tool before buying one.

Reserve ribbon, thick buttons and raised pieces for books that can close around them. A flat pocket or photographed object uses less thickness.

Steps

  1. Measure

Write down the page width, height and space needed by the binding. Use these measurements when selecting paper and photo sizes.

  2. Gather essentials

Set out the album, plain paper, copied photos, ruler, scissors and chosen mounts. Make one undecorated page with that kit.

  3. Test a sample

Try the mounting method on a spare copy and backing sheet. Check the page can turn and the book closes before repeating it.

  4. Buy the missing item

Buy the colour or decoration missing from the sample page. Avoid choosing a paper pack before you know where you will use it.

Questions

Do beginners need a scrapbook cutting machine?

A ruler and scissors cover a basic book. A machine is useful only when your design needs many repeated cuts and you expect to use it again.

Which supplies matter most for old photographs?

The enclosure and mounting method matter more than decoration. Use copies in experimental layouts and choose storage materials specified as photo-safe.

Can I use ordinary paper for a scrapbook?

You can use it for sketches and copied material. For valuable originals, choose appropriate photo-safe housing rather than relying on an ordinary craft sheet.
