8x8 scrapbook layouts with room for keepsakes

For an 8x8 scrapbook layout, leave a half-inch outer margin, choose one main photo and reserve a separate space for text or a small keepsake.

An 8x8 page has little room to spare once you add a full-size photo. Test the photo and keepsake sizes before attaching them.

Use one scene per page. If a second scene needs smaller photos and tiny writing, give it the facing page instead.

Try this in your own scrapbook

Arrange your photos on the pages of a digital scrapbook in your browser.

Work within a seven-inch square

Half-inch margins leave a seven-inch square. Allow more room beside a tight binding, and measure the part of the page you can see when the book lies open.

Try paper cut-outs before placing the photos. Check that the binding does not hide their inner edges.

Leave a space for writing or a ticket

A 6x4 landscape photo leaves room above or below for a ticket and your account of the outing. Keep these beside the photo they describe.

A grid keeps several small photos in a compact area. Overlapping them can make the group wider than you expect.

Keep decorations smaller than the photographs

A narrow paper strip or one small label is enough for a compact spread. Large flowers and thick envelopes can make the page hard to turn.

On a digital page, zoom out to reading size. Check the text there, rather than judging it while enlarged.

Steps

  1. One landscape photo

Centre a 6x4 photo within the seven-inch working area. Put the date below it and a flat ticket above, without covering a face.

  2. Two portraits

Set two 3x4 photos side by side with a quarter-inch gap. Use the remaining lower space for one account of the shared event.

  3. Four square details

Arrange four 3x3 crops in a square with a quarter-inch gap. Keep the outer margin clear and place the location in the spare strip.

  4. A photo and an object

Put a 4x4 crop on the left and a flat receipt on the right. Move a bulky keepsake to a separate pocket page.

Questions

Can I fit a 6x4 photo on an 8x8 page?

Yes. A landscape 6x4 photo fits within a half-inch outer margin. Leave extra room at the binding if the page does not open flat.

How many photos fit on an 8x8 layout?

Try one large photo, two 3x4 photos or four 3x3 photos. Use fewer pictures if you also want space for a keepsake.

Should both pages use the same arrangement?

Keep the margins the same. A large photo on one page and a small grid opposite can show the setting and its details.
