One-photo scrapbook layout ideas

Place one large photo inside the page margins and leave room for its date or a related keepsake. Keep the full subject visible rather than cropping it to fill the page.

These suggested arrangements use a 12-inch square page. Measure the usable area of your own album before following the dimensions.

Try the photo on spare paper before adding a keepsake. A centred image leaves space at both sides; moving it left or right creates a wider column on the other side.

Try this in your own scrapbook

Check the photograph's shape and detail

A portrait needs enough height to show the person. A landscape can establish a place. A detailed object image needs a size that keeps its marks readable.

Keep the original shape when a crop would remove the subject. Move the surrounding material instead of forcing the image into a square.

Centre the photo or leave a side column

A centred photo leaves equal side margins. Move it to one side when a keepsake or your own writing needs a wider column.

  • A centred 6 by 8-inch portrait leaves 3 inches at each side of a 12-inch page.
  • A 6 by 4-inch landscape in the upper half leaves room for a keepsake beneath it.
  • Moving the photo to one side makes more space for a column beside it.

Put dates and keepsakes near the photo

Keep related information near the image. A date floating in a distant corner may be mistaken for a page number or a different event.

Avoid filling the remaining area just because it is blank. A small relevant ticket can add more than several decorative shapes.

Place the photos

  1. Centred portrait

Put a 6 by 8-inch portrait 3 inches from the left edge and 1.5 inches from the top. Add its date or place directly beneath it.

  2. Upper landscape

Place a 6 by 4-inch landscape 3 inches from the left and 2 inches from the top. Reserve the lower part for one keepsake or your own writing.

  3. Photo with side column

Set a 6-inch-wide photo 0.75 inches from the left edge. Leave a 0.5-inch gap before a right-hand column, keeping both inside the page margin.

  4. Object beneath

Position a 6 by 4-inch image above a flat keepsake no wider than the photo. Align their left edges and leave at least 0.5 inches between them.

Questions

What size photo works for a one-photo scrapbook page?

On the suggested 12-inch square, a 6 by 8-inch portrait or 6 by 4-inch landscape gives a clear starting point. Adjust for the image's shape and detail.

How do I fill a one-photo page without clutter?

Use a related keepsake, known date or your own text. You can also keep the remaining area empty if the photograph already says enough.

Should the single photograph be centred?

Centre it for equal side margins. Move it left or right if a keepsake or text needs a wider column, keeping dates close to the image.
