Making your Athens photo book
Athens is a city you look down on. Put the Parthenon on the first spread, with the Erechtheion and its porch of stone maidens, and the view from Lycabettus on the second, white blocks running out to the sea at Piraeus. The third belongs to Plaka and Anafiotika, where the lanes under the Acropolis turn into whitewashed steps that feel like an island. Finish at night with souvlaki on Mitropoleos and the Acropolis lit, seen from a roof in Monastiraki.
The Acropolis opens at eight, and that first hour is the coolest and emptiest. Keep the paper ticket for a page of its own, and go up Lycabettus for sunset, when the marble on the hill opposite turns pink.
