Making your Chiang Mai photo book
Chiang Mai is a city of temples inside a square moat, with Doi Suthep on the hill above. Put Wat Phra Singh and the carved teak halls of the old city on spread one. Spread two is for Wat Chedi Luang, the great brick chedi that lost its top in an earthquake. The gold chedi on Doi Suthep, lit at night, fills spread three. Keep the last spread for Yi Peng in November, when lanterns hang in the temples and paper ones float up over the Ping river.
Lanterns go up on the full moon of the twelfth Thai month, and the organised releases need booking well before you fly. The temples are quietest early in the morning. Keep a notebook of sa paper from the Sunday walking street on Ratchadamnoen and photograph its cover flat. Khao soi, the curry noodle soup, deserves a page.
