Making your Crete photo book
Crete is a big island, and a book of it usually covers two coasts. In the west there is the lagoon at Balos, seen from the path above, and the pink sand at Elafonisi; those make a strong start. Chania's Venetian harbour and lighthouse come next. Heraklion has Knossos and the market on 1866 Street. Close on a gorge, Samaria or the shorter Imbros, and the taverna waiting at the bottom.
Balos is best from the top of the path in the morning, before the boats from Kissamos fill the water. Most tavernas bring a little carafe of raki with the bill; photograph the bill, written in biro, and keep it.
