Making your Hoi An photo book
Hoi An's old town is small enough to walk end to end before breakfast, and that is when to photograph it. The early walk fills the first spread: yellow walls on Tran Phu street and the Japanese Covered Bridge with nobody on it. By evening the lanterns are lit over the Thu Bon river, which is the second, shot from a boat if you took one. Cao lau and a banh mi from Phuong earn the third. An Bang beach, or the tailor who made your jacket, can have the fourth.
The tour groups arrive about nine and the lanterns come on around six, so the hours in between are for sleeping off the heat. On the full moon night each month the shops turn their electric lights off and the river fills with candles. The tailor's fitting slip, measurements and all, makes a good flat page.
