Making your Lake District photo book
In the Lake District the book takes its shape from the lakes you walked round. Wastwater with Great Gable at its head is the opening spread most people want. Put Derwentwater and its islands from Friar's Crag on the second, and Ullswater from the deck of a steamer on the third. The fourth is for the tops, Catbells or Helvellyn by Striding Edge if you did it. Grey Herdwick sheep turn up on every path, and one of them belongs in the book.
The fells clear and close in within an hour, so a grey morning is not a lost one, and low cloud on the water photographs well. The bracken turns the hillsides rust by October. Keep the Ullswater steamer ticket and the label from a packet of Grasmere gingerbread and photograph both flat. Proper boots matter, because the best views are a long way off the road.
