Making your Madeira photo book
Madeira is steep in every direction, and the book reads best with the sea in most of the pictures. The north coast's cliffs and black pebble beaches open it. Ponta de São Lourenço, the bare red headland at the eastern tip, fills another spread. Use the middle for the levadas, the old water channels you walk beside, and the 25 Fontes trail. Funchal closes the book, the harbour from above and the wicker toboggan run down from Monte.
Pico do Arieiro at sunrise, with the cloud below you, is worth the alarm; book a taxi the night before. The north side gets far more rain than Funchal, so pack for both. The bird of paradise on the cover is sold at the Mercado dos Lavradores, boxed for the flight home. A poncha bar's receipt is small and flat enough to go in.
