Making your Provence photo book
Provence means hilltop villages above fields. Gordes, seen from the road as you drive in, goes first, and the Abbaye de Sénanque behind its rows of lavender second. The ochre cliffs at Roussillon stain your shoes orange and deserve the third spread. For the fourth, a market: Apt on a Saturday, or L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue on Sunday, with antiques laid out along the river.
Lavender flowers in late June and July and is cut soon after, so an August trip often finds stubble. Valensole, over to the east, has the biggest fields; go in the evening, when the light is low and the car parks empty.
