Rome on a mint green scooter, set against dark teal. Between the covers: the Colosseum at opening time, St Peter's dome through the keyhole on the Aventine and the ochre streets of Trastevere.

Making your Rome photo book
Rome has too much for one book, so pick a walk and stick to it. The Colosseum and the Forum are the obvious first spread, and they should be. After that, the view over the roofs to St Peter's dome, from the Giardino degli Aranci on the Aventine or the Pincio above Piazza del Popolo. Trastevere's ochre houses and ivy fill the middle. End at the Pantheon after dark, with a plate of cacio e pepe somewhere nearby.
Be at the Colosseum when it opens; by eleven the queue and the heat are both bad. On the Aventine, the keyhole in the Knights of Malta gate frames St Peter's, and a phone will take it if you press the lens to the hole. The tear-off stub from the Vatican Museums is worth a corner. The fountains run all day, so carry a bottle and fill it.
