Making your Sicily photo book
Sicily is too big to see in one go, so a book usually picks a corner. Cefalù, with its beach under the rock and its Norman cathedral, can carry the whole first spread. Palermo's street markets, Ballarò and the Vucciria, fill the second. The baroque towns of the south-east, Noto and Ragusa, rebuilt in golden stone after the 1693 earthquake, suit the third. Taormina's Greek theatre with Etna behind it, or the salt pans at Trapani, make the last.
The path up La Rocca starts in Cefalù's old town; climb it in the morning before the heat, and you look straight down on the cathedral and the beach. In Palermo it is arancina and in Catania arancino, and both cities will correct you. The heads on the cover are teste di moro, ceramic pots you see on balconies across the island.
