Making your Venice photo book
Venice repeats the same few things: water, brick, bridges and washing on lines. Let the book wander the way the city does. The Grand Canal and the Rialto suit the first spread. Then the small canals of Cannaregio and Castello, where boats are tied up against red walls. Santa Maria della Salute, seen across the water from the Zattere, gets a page. The last goes to the islands, Burano's painted houses and the glass furnaces on Murano.
Get up early once. By half past seven the Rialto market is laying out fish and the canals are quiet enough to hear the boats. A vaporetto pass beats single tickets, and the card is a keeper. Line 1 goes slowly the length of the Grand Canal; sit outside at the front. The gondola on the cover is moored by striped poles, the kind that line every canal.
