Newborn photos are close and alike: a face, a hand, a foot, in the same room and light. One large photo a page with plenty of white space suits them better than a collage.
A first-year book has more in it. Scrapbook designs leave room beside the photos for the scan, the hospital bracelet and the cards, each photographed flat.
First weeks or first year
A newborn book is 20 to 24 pages. Make it in the first two months, while the photos are near the top of your phone.
Build a first-year book month by month. At the end of each month, move a handful of photos into an album on your phone. By the first birthday most of the book is chosen.
Shape and cover
Portrait suits a baby lying down or held upright, which is how most phone photos are taken. Square takes a mix. Landscape suits photos with the whole family in.
Hardback for the copy that gets looked at most. Softcover for grandparents and godparents.
Photographing the small things
Lay the scan, the bracelet and the cards by a window and photograph them from straight above, with no flash. Add them in the studio like any other photo.

About 90 to 120 in 40 pages, which is seven to ten a month. A newborn book of 24 pages holds about 40 to 60.
Should a newborn photo book be portrait or square?
Portrait if most photos were taken on a phone held upright. Square if there is a mix and you want each one uncropped.
Can I add the birth details?
Yes. Every design has lines for titles and captions, so the name, weight, time and place go wherever you type them.
