There are three kinds of family book here: a year of the family, one person's childhood, and a book a small child can look at.

A year needs order, so pick a simple design with a spread for each month or season. A childhood mixes old prints and phone photos, which a scrapbook design with frames and photo corners holds well. A child's book needs big photos and few words.

The square, 21 x 21 cm, takes tall and wide photos alike. Hardback is the cover for a book that gets passed round for years.

A childhood album from old prints

Scan the prints, or photograph them flat by a window. Sort them by year before you open the studio.

Old prints are often small and soft. Put two or three to a page rather than stretching one across a spread. Scrapbook frames and corners make mixed print sizes look deliberate.

A book a child can hold

For a toddler: one photo a page, faces they know, and a name under each. The square is easier for small hands than A4.

Make a copy for each home the child stays in. Order them together; each copy after the first costs less to post.

How many photos for a family year

40 pages hold about 90 to 120 photos, with an opening spread for each season. Ask each person in the house for their ten favourites first.

Questions

Which shape suits a family photo book?

Square takes a mix of phone photos without cropping. Landscape suits group photos and a family standing in a row.

Can I mix old prints and phone photos?

Yes. Scan or photograph the prints and add them like any other photo. Keep small, soft prints small on the page.

Can I order a copy for each side of the family?

Yes. Put the copies in one order. Each copy after the first costs less to post.

How do I scan old prints without a scanner?

Lay each print flat by a window, hold your phone straight above it and turn the flash off.
