A present has to be printed and posted before the day. A book of the day itself has no deadline, and you make it in the week after.

A year of the family reads well in a full-photo design, a month or a season to each spread. The day itself suits a scrapbook design with room for the menu and the cards.

Hardback suits a present that will sit on a shelf. Softcover is lighter to post, so choose it for a copy for each side of the family. Lay-flat is made in Europe and has the longest wait, so order it first.

A present or a record of the day

A present covers the year up to about the end of November. Keep it short, and use a cover photo the whole family will know.

A book of the day is easiest to make between Christmas and New Year. Ask everybody to send their photos that week.

Shape and cover

Landscape suits the table, the tree and the group on the sofa. Portrait suits children, one to a page. Square takes a mix of phone photos without cropping.

For grandparents, an A4 hardback is easier to hold and read than a small softcover. Order copies for relatives together; each copy after the first costs less to post.

How many photos

A year at one spread a month fills 24 to 30 pages and takes 50 to 70 photos. Christmas Day alone rarely needs more than 20 pages.

Leaving enough time

December is the busiest month for printing and for the post. The table above gives the last day to order each cover for delivery before Christmas.

Each date allows the longest usual wait for that cover and extra time for the December post. The wait counts from when you approve the proof and pay.

Make the book in November. That leaves time to read the proof properly and fix a misspelt name before the date.

Questions

When should I order a Christmas photo book?

By the date for your cover in the table on this page. Lay-flat has the earliest date.

Can I order several copies for the family?

Yes. Up to 20 copies of the same book can go in one order.

What goes in a Christmas photo book besides photos?

Anything you can photograph flat: cards, the menu, a child's drawing, a gift tag. The scrapbook designs leave room for them beside the photos.

What if I miss the last date?

Order anyway and give it in the new year, or make a book of the day instead, which has no deadline.
